On March 17, 2019, the Government of Canada submitted to WIPO its accession form to the Madrid Protocol on the International registration of trademarks, bringing the total number of member countries in the Convention on international trademarks to 104.

Canada’s membership in the Madrid Protocol will become effective on June 17, 2019, at that date it will be possible to apply for the protection of a trademark in Canada when filing an international trademark or extending an existing international registration.
